What is CBD?
Anxiety disorder is one of the most common mental illnesses in Canada. Estimates posted by the Canadian Mental Health Association show that this mental health affects 5 percent of the household population in the country.
Similarly, data from the Canadian Community Health Survey-Mental Health shows that about 700, 000 Canadians (aged 15 and older) suffered from generalized anxiety disorders in 2012.
These facts and figures have stunned the population and have started a new era of research into anxiety disorders. With big pharmaceuticals trying and failing to come up with an effective way of dealing with this mental illness, Cannabidiol (CBD) has emerged as a viable treatment.
This is because Cannabidiol’s astounding anti-anxiety properties have been documented in numerous medical studies. In fact, medical research shows that CBD can be used to counteract the effects of THC on the body and mind.
In order to understand how Cannabidiol can be used to treat anxiety, you must first understand how endocannabinoid systems (ECSs) work. The term endocannabinoid is used to describe an intricate interconnection of receptors and the compounds that can bind to (or cause reactions with) them.
The interaction of these endocannabinoids (or lack thereof) with the receptors in our body can induce a plethora of responses. For example, it’s been documented that those who suffer from PTSD exhibit a distinct lack of anandamide – a natural endocannabinoid that binds to our receptors the same way THC does. Therefore, supplementing the lack of anandamide with Cannabidiol can help the body overcome its deficiency which has a soothing and therapeutic effect on the body and mind.
The same holds true for treating anxiety with Cannabidiol as medical papers written by a team of Brazilian researchers documents how CBD helps in decreasing anxiety levels. The case study in its entirety, including brain scans and blood flow patterns, was published in the US National Library of Medicine and can be read here.
Similarly, another case study details how CBD can be used to treat and manage social anxiety. The researchers in this medical study performed a public speaking test and monitored common anxiety indicators (e.g. heart rate, blood pressure, and other such factors).
The team of researchers concluded that the group that took CBD exhibited a significant decrease in their levels of anxiety and discomfort. On the other hand, the placebo group of the same study demonstrated higher levels of anxiety and cognitive impairment.
In fact, Cannabidiol is much better at treating anxiety than benzodiazepines (the most overprescribed medication for anxiety). For starters, the CDC reported that out of the 22,000 people that died from overdoses in 2013, 31% were a direct consequence of benzodiazepine overdose (most commonly Xanax).
Furthermore, benzodiazepines also cause sleep-related and generalized cognitive problems in the long run. What makes matters worse is that this drug has been identified as the most common cause of induced dementia in the elderly.
On the other hand, Cannabidiol has no such effects on people. Here are the documented effects of CBD on the human body:
- Calms the mind
- Improves the mood
- Improves the sleep cycle
- Minimizes distracting thoughts
- Enhances one’s sense of wellbeing
CBD for Stress & Mood
How Cannabidiol (CBD) Works For Stress Relief:
It’s an open secret that we’re living in one of the most stressful times in recent history. High workload and mounting political tensions have started to gnaw at our sanity as we continue to get more and more stressed.
While that may sound trivial at first, it’s important to give stress the attention that it deserves because it’s one of the few conditions that can literally kill you. Recent studies suggest that severe levels of stress take its toll on the body (in particular, the brain and the heart) and can do irreparable damage if left untreated and unaddressed for too long.
Excessive levels of stress are some of the main reasons why people turn to cannabis and Cannabidiol—it offers quick relief. The correlation between stress reduction and Cannabidiol intake becomes apparent when you analyze the effect CBD has on the endocannabinoid system (ECS).
For those who don’t know, we have two important receptors in the body called the CB1 and the CB2. These receptors are integral parts of a system in our body that governs numerous critical factors like the level of appetite and our general mood, etc. In particular, CBD latches on to a receptor called the 5-HT1A which, in turn, enhances the body’s production of serotonin. This helps manage stress with an instant elevation in our mood.
If that sounds a little familiar to you then that’s because the infamous drug THC behaves in a similar manner and tends to have a psychoactive effect on the body. Fortunately, CBD cannot bind directly to the aforementioned CB1 receptor and, therefore, doesn’t have the same negative effects when consumed.
As discussed above, stress takes its toll on the heart as a study conducted by a team of researchers at Harvard documented a direct correlation between artery inflammation and stress which, consequently, increases the likelihood of a heart attack.
That being said, recent medical research has documented the powerful anti-inflammatory characteristics of Cannabidiol. This means that its consumption will significantly reduce the chances of heart damage.
Another unpublicized side effect of stress is high blood pressure which can lead to a plethora of different medical conditions (ranging from atherosclerosis to heart attacks). Once again, CBD users have nothing to worry about as this wonder drug also regulates our blood pressure and reduces the chances of artery inflammation.
In a nutshell, here’s how CBD helps in stress reduction
- Has a relaxing effect on the mind
- Shows no binding affinity for the CB1 receptor meaning it doesn’t adversely affect our bodies like THC
- Enhances the body’s production of serotonin to improve the mood
- Powerful anti-inflammatory qualities significantly reduce the chances of heart related problems

Why Athletes are Ditching Ibuprofen for CBD
Injuries are a part of an athlete’s life. No matter your age, gender or the type of sport you play, you may injure yourself at some point in your career.
When facing an injury, muscle aches or pain, many athletes are likely to take an over-the-counter painkiller, such as Ibuprofen.
In fact, a survey shows that up to 70 percent of distance runners and other endurance athletes take the pill before every workout or competition.
Popping pills like Ibuprofen may seem easy, convenient and offer short-term pain-relief to athletes, but one should not ignore the dark side of painkillers.
For starters, continued consumption of Ibuprofen can lead to addiction. Other than addiction issues, several studies indicate that ibuprofen and similar painkillers can cause serious physical damage to athletes.
In fact, according to a research study, runners who frequently took Ibuprofen, exhibited trace amounts of colonic bacteria, which enhanced the risk of inflammation and cell damage. In other words, Ibuprofen significantly reduces the natural ability of our muscles to replenish and repair after workouts.
Furthermore, prolonged or excessive use of the painkiller is linked to heart problems, such as heart disease and stroke. It can also increase your risk for stomach ulcers and heartburn.
Keeping in mind these side effects, many amateur and professional athletes are now consuming marijuana for dealing with pain reduction.
Marijuana is derived from the cannabis plant, which contains hundreds of active compounds. Among these derivatives, Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the most useful substances as far as pain relief is concerned.
Time and again, researchers have studied the link between CBD and pain. One of the biggest advantages of medical marijuana is that it can reduce inflammation and pain. This is because CBD interacts with serotonin and vanilloid receptors in the brain. Serotonin and vanilloid receptors affect a person’s mood.
Some of the biggest sporting names like Michael Phelps, Sean O’Malley, and more, are the strongest advocates of CBD.
In fact, the World Anti-Doping Agency removed CBD from its list of banned substances recently, prompting many professional athletes to ditch Ibuprofen for CBD.
Along with inflammation and pain, CBD can improve symptoms of anxiety and depression by interacting with serotonin, GABA and other neurotransmitters.
Quality sleep is important for peak athletic performance. Many athletes face sleeping issues due to nerves. Studies indicate that the ingredients found in marijuana, CBC and THC, can reduce sleep latency and improve sleep apnea.
One of the primary reasons why CBD is safer than Ibuprofen is because it’s a natural substance. Unlike painkillers, CBD has far milder side effects. Once you start relying on Ibuprofen, you may experience withdrawal issues, such as headaches, dizziness, stomach pain, bloating, nausea, weakness, fatigue, and so on.
Therefore, it is safe to say that CBD is a better alternative than painkillers like Ibuprofen. In a nutshell, CBD can reduce pain, inflammation, anxiety and enhance your athletic performance and quality of life.

Studies on CBD and Cancer
Cancer is one of the primary causes of death in the world. According to the World Health Organization data, one in six cancer-related deaths took place in 2015. In other words, 8.8 million people lost their lives from cancer.
Regardless of age, gender or socio-economic status, cancer can affect anyone. The most common types of cancer in men include prostate, lung, stomach, colorectal and liver. Breast, lung, colorectal, cervix and stomach cancer are the most common forms of cancer among women.
In Canada, one in two individuals is likely to get cancer at some point in their life, according to the Canadian Cancer Statistics. The report further adds that one in four people in the country will die from cancer.
Although these figures are distressing and indicate a rather dismal scenario, medical researchers are yet to find an effective cure for cancer. Conventional cancer treatments include chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. However, these treatments do not guarantee results. These days, people are looking for alternative solutions for alleviating cancer symptoms. This includes the use of medical marijuana.
Several studies suggest that cannabidiol (CBD) – one of the primary compounds present in the cannabis plant – plays a pivotal role in pain reduction associated with cancer.
In fact, the latest study on the subject shows that CBD and chemotherapy tripled cancer survival rates in mice.
Cancer is a vicious disease which takes a physical and mental toll on patients. What makes it particularly frightening is that some types of cancer are recurring i.e. they can come back after initial treatment. This can be because some cancer cells migrate to other parts of the body and then develop a tumor.
Research shows that CBD’s anti-cancer properties can prevent cancer cells from spreading to and affecting the healthy tissues of the body. CBD has the ability to possibly slow down the growth of cancerous cells.
In addition, CBD can be helpful to patients undergoing chemotherapy as it can reduce the side effects (treat vomiting, nausea) from aggressive cancer treatments like chemo and reduce pain.
When it comes to pain and inflammation, consuming the right amount of medical marijuana can calm the nerves and reduce pain. This is primarily due to the release of dopamine (the feel good chemical). This blocks the pain receptors from sending distress signals to the brain and enhances a person’s mood. Therefore, medical marijuana can reduce symptoms of pain, anxiety and stress among cancer patients.
To put it briefly, medical marijuana can help:
- Prevent cancerous cells from moving to other parts of the body;
- Reduce pain and some of the damage caused by aggressive cancer treatments;
- Relaxes the mind;
- Improves the mood;
It‘s important to understand that medical marijuana is not a cure for cancer. There is no evidence suggesting that CBD can prevent or cure cancer in humans.
Therefore, it’s imperative to seek treatment for cancer, especially if it has reached the advanced stage. If you do not seek proper medical treatment, harmful cancerous cells will continue growing and take over your body.
CBD for Sore Muscles
Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (or DOMS as it’s commonly called) is fairly common among fitness enthusiasts. Most physical trainers justify sore muscles by quoting the ‘fact’ that it takes the body a while to get used to the new, more physically taxing routine.
But, what if we told you that you don’t have to put up with sore muscles? What if you could exert yourself more at the gym and get the results that you desire with pushing your body to the limit? All that and much more can be achieved by using CBD to treat sore muscles!
For those of you who don’t know, CBD is a derivative of marijuana that boasts remarkable health benefits. Not only does it lower anxiety levels and reduce inflammation, but it can even minimize muscle tension. Confused? Allow us to elaborate!
When used topically, Cannabidiol offers instant pain relief and can easily be used to soothe wounds both old and new. Pharmacies in the United States have developed hemp creams from the cannabis plant to produce CBD oil – a highly effective muscle relaxant and pain alleviating agent.
Here are a few conditions that hemp cream (i.e. CBD) can be used to treat
Arthritis is a horrible medical condition that is caused by the inflammation of the joints. Even though the disease is one of the most common ailments plaguing the United States today (the CDC estimates that about 54.4 million US adults suffer from it), there isn’t much information on possible treatments.
All that is about to change as a report published in the European Journal of Pain documented the effects of applying CBD oil on mice who suffered from the disease. Although CBD oil was applied (topically) for just a period of 4 days, the research team stated that it significantly reduced inflammation and pain in the rats. Furthermore, no adverse effects were documented which means CBD is a safe and effective treatment of arthritis!
2. Multiple Sclerosis (MS):
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a horrible disease that targets the brain and spinal cord. The disease, when left untreated for too long, has the potential to completely disable a patient’s motor function and leave them paralyzed. On top of that, MS causes irreversible damage to the patient’s nerves which causes immense pain and muscle spasms.
Fortunately, CBD makes it easier for the sufferers of this horrible disease to deal with muscle spasms. A recently published medical report concluded that the topical application of CBD oil significantly reduces the spasticity caused by MS. Although these findings are yet to be seconded by another medical research, the patients who have applied CBD have reported similar results!
3. Chronic Back Pain:
It’s no secret that sitting at your desk for hours on end and not exercising enough can result in chronic back pain. Many people whose jobs require them to stay seated for the majority of the day report back pain and find it difficult to bend over to tie their shoe laces.
This is where CBD comes into the picture. A medical study published in the esteemed Journal of Experimental Medicine documents how CBD can be used to address and minimize chronic back pain. Furthermore, repeated use of CBD oil in the long run doesn’t result in a tolerance buildup to the marijuana derivative, so people don’t have to up their dosage after a while.
In other words, you have nothing to worry about when using CBD oil to treat your chronic back pain!
All these findings highlight the potential of using CBD oil and hemp cream as a pain relaxant as the drug has no harmful effects whatsoever!
CBD for Diabetes
How Cannabidiol (CBD) Lowers Incidence of Diabetes:
Diabetes is becoming more and more common these days. The problem with diabetes is that it often leads to other, more serious and severe medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, end-stage renal failure, and foot ulcers that may result in limb amputation!
Fortunately, sufferers of diabetes can curb the damage dealt by diabetes by using Cannabidiol to treat their disease. This is because CBD stabilizes the patient’s sugar levels and even reduces the pain associated with diabetes (commonly caused due to nerve inflammation). As discussed above, CBD can be used to yield hemp cream – a powerful ointment that helps minimize neuropathic pain. Apart from that, CBD also helps in enhancing the circulation of blood while lowering the blood pressure.
In 2013, a research published in the American Journal of Medicine concluded that CBD prevents blood sugar levels spikes. Furthermore, the same medical study went on to claim that regular users of Cannabidiol have a lower probability of becoming obese – something which is priceless for diabetic people.
Similar results were also obtained when a separate study was conducted by a team of researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. These researchers concluded that CBD could be modified to treat numerous medical ailments such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease.
Researchers at the well-respected Harvard School of Public Health also reported similar findings when evaluating the performance of CBD with regards to diabetes. Simply put, the medical study concluded that long-time users of marijuana reported a massive 17% drop in their threshold of insulin resistance.
Even though marijuana may increase appetite, the research documented that users of CBD had a smaller waist circumference than non-user on a similar diet. In other words, CBD has remarkable and, frankly speaking, unmatched metabolic benefits.
In a nutshell, here’s why there’s a lot of excitement about treating diabetes with Cannabidiol
- Marijuana users had 16% lower insulin levels when fasting
- Marijuana users had a 17% lower resistance to insulin (as compared to non-users)
- Regular users of Cannabidiol exhibited improved blood flow and circulation which is ideal for diabetics.
- CBD improves the levels of HDL-C in diabetes
- Smaller waist circumference than the average diabetic non-user of CBD
CBD Benefits for Mental Illnesses
The positives of Cannabidiol aren’t limited to inflammation relief and better pain management as recent medical research has opened up a lot of avenues for exploration. For starters, there’s ample evidence suggesting that this derivative of the cannabis plant can be used to treat a variety of mental illnesses.
Before we begin addressing the host of medical conditions that can be treated by Cannabidiol, it’s important to state that you should always consult a licensed physician with such serious matters. Make no mistake about it; CBD is a great way of managing your mental illnesses, it isn’t, however, an outright cure.
So, before you start self-prescribing large doses of CBD oil, remember always to talk to your doctor as they know better. With that out of the way, here’s a definitive list of mental illnesses that can be treated by CBD.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD):
PTSD is a very common mental disorder that affects more than 3 million Americans every year. The symptoms for this condition range from heightened reactions to scarring nightmares and anxiety. In the United States, PTSD is commonly treated using highly concentrated anti-depressants such as Prozac and Zoloft that are highly addictive and can lead to nasty withdrawal symptoms.
This is where CBD comes into the picture. As compared to the commonly prescribed pills used to treat PTSD, CBD has no withdrawal symptoms and has no adverse effects on the body. This means that sufferers of this heartbreaking condition can use the drug to take better care of themselves.
For those of you who don’t know, PTSD patients have (generally speaking) exhibited extremely low levels of anandamide. This molecule binds to our receptors and promotes healing and makes it possible for us to overcome depression and bad memories. With the supply of anandamide cut significantly short, PTSD patients can’t process traumatic events naturally, which further elevates their condition.
However, CBD is a chemically quite similar to anandamide and medical research shows that it can bind with our cannabinoid receptors to promote healing. This results in reduced levels of anxiety and better memory suppression capabilities.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD):
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is another common mental condition that affects 1 out of every 100 adults in the United States (which roughly equates to 2-3 million American adults). Common symptoms of the condition include repeating unwanted ideas, fear of contamination, and constantly repeating trivial tasks (such as mopping the floor or washing your hands), etc.
A medical research posted in a 2013 release of the esteemed journal of Fundamental and Clinical Pharmacology stated that CBD shows signs of minimizing OCD symptoms. The research team injected lab rats with mCPP (a constituent of the drug ecstasy) and noted their behavior. They noted that once infected with this compound, the lab rats started burying their marbles in the holding pen over and over again – which a textbook OCD symptom.
However, once CBD was administered to these lab rats, the research team observed that they went back to their normal behavior. This lead the research team to conclude that ‘CBD has great potential of treating OCD’, and that further research needs to be conducted into the matter.
Anxiety and Social Anxiety:
It’s a well known fact that more than anxiety is one of the most prevalent medical conditions in the United States (as recent estimates suggest that the condition plagues more than 19% American adults).
As discussed above, CBD has shown remarkable properties for treating anxiety disorders. Countless medical studies have all documented how efficient the drug is at reducing levels of anxiety and at the suppression of unwanted and unnerving thoughts.
All these medical studies highlight the unmatched potential of CBD for treating serious mental illnesses. We’re hopeful that, with time, more research will be conducted on the subject matter and that we’ll be able to synthesize CBD derivatives that are highly potent and efficient without having any adverse effect on our health.
CBD Relives Pain and Inflammation
When you look up the health benefits of CBD consumption online, you’re bound to be flooded with results that highlight its ability to treat mood swings and reduce anxiety. However, if you were to make your way down to the third and fourth page of Google’s search results, you’ll find a plethora of scholarly articles stating the drug’s pain reduction properties. Here’s how CBD helps in reducing pain by promoting the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
To understand how CBD minimizes the pain felt by an individual, we must first understand the adverse effects of inflammation on the human body. For those of you who don’t know, inflammation is a self-defense mechanism of the human body to kick-start the process of healing.
When pathogens attack our immune system, the body sends a large amount of white blood cells to deal with them. This can be beneficial in instances when prompt action is needed (for example, when you bruise your elbow and the skin is exposed to pathogens), however, should it persist longer than desired, inflammation can cause countless conditions such as chronic pain, psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, etc.
In other words, inflammation is mostly to blame for chronic bouts of pain. So, theoretically speaking, if we’re able to address inflammation, we’ll rid ourselves of pain and the hurt that it causes. Enter CBD.
The anti-inflammatory response of CBD is well-documented. A research published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine in 2012 claims that the drug targets the alpha-3 (α3) glycine receptors in the human body to minimize unwanted inflammation and significantly soothe neuropathic pain. The research paper, in its entirety, can be read here.
Similar findings were also documented when the drug was under the microscope back in 2013. Researchers working on this study explained that comprehensive lab analysis highlighted how CBD exhibits highly desirable anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anxiolytic properties. Furthermore, CBD is also an antipsychotic agent which means that it doesn’t affect the human body the same way THC does and is, therefore, completely safe for consumption and utilization. The research was published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and can be read here.
Moreover, there’s ample evidence suggesting that CBD can be used to treat a vast variety of medical conditions such as neuroinflammation, epilepsy, nausea, and even schizophrenia.
The best thing about using CBD to address pain and minimize inflammation is that, unlike other pain medications, it’s not addictive. In other words, it can be used to address these problems without worrying about withdrawal symptoms or getting hooked on the drug!
CBD Helps to Fight Cancer
Cancer is a disease that has perplexed scientists and researchers for ages. With an outright cure for the condition yet to be created, cancer continues to extract a heavy toll on society. Recent statistics indicate that in 2018, more than 1.7 million cases of the disease will be reported in the United States alone, out of which, more than 600,000 people will die.
As modern medicine continues to fail at addressing the cancer problem, people have turned to CBD to treat this horrible disease. After all, the herb has been used medically for thousands of years so there’s a high chance that this drug could cure cancer, right?
Well, the answer to that question is complex, nuanced, and requires careful explanation. We don’t want to be one of the thousands of online platforms that make outlandish claims that CBD can cure cancer as this simply isn’t the case. Here’s what we know about curing cancer with CBD thus far
The reason why there isn’t any tangible evidence suggesting that CBD can be used to treat cancer is because the vast majority of research conducted has been done on synthetic cancer cells. That being said, the result of these studies (although not applicable directly) show that CBD has great potential for treating cancer.
One aspect of medical research that we can conclusively agree on is the numerous clinical trials conducted over the years. In particular, a study was published by Dr. Manuel Guzman and his team of doctors and researchers (from Spain) where they observed the effects of THC on nine people who suffered from gliobalstoma multiforme.
For those of you who don’t know glioblastoma multiforme (commonly referred to as glioblastoma) is one of the most aggressive forms of brain tumors. Due to its astonishingly fast growth rate, this disease is (in most cases) incurable.
However, when Dr. Guzman injected his patients with a highly purified form THC directly into their brain, they showed signs of improvement. This shows that CBD has great cancer fighting capabilities and can be considered one of the most important tools in our fight against this horrid disease.
Cancer Treatment Side Effects:
The side effects of common cancer treatments (such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, etc.) are well known. Anyone who has seen a cancer patient or suffered from the disease themselves know that the symptoms of cancer include
- Loss of appetite
- Hair loss
- Heightened anxiety
This is where CBD really outshines and outperforms all other treatment methods. A research published by the National Cancer Institute states that the drug can be used to alleviate some of the most common symptoms of cancer.
That being said, it’s worth noting that the NCI has endorsed the use of CBD for cancer treatment. So, if you (or a loved one) suffer from this awful disease, talk to a leading oncologist and don’t start using CBD without proper consultation.
CBD and Breast Cancer:
Breast cancer is by far the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer as estimates posted by BreastCancer.org indicate that 1 in 8 (or approximately 12.4% of) women in the United States will develop some sort of breast cancer in their lifetime!
In recent years, there has been a lot of speculation into the matter with CBD activists claiming that this wonder drug can be used to stunt cancer growth. While there’s a lot of evidence pointing to this, it’s important to remain objective and not let emotions cloud our judgment.
The study in question is called the Modulation of the Tumor Microenvironment and Inhibition of EGF/EGFR pathway and is an attempt to document the anti-tumor effects of Cannabidiol on aggressive breast cancer cells.
The study proves, without a shadow of doubt, that CBD inhibits the growth of breast cancer and can even be used to inhibit the metastasis of the aggressive cancerous cells. That being said, we still have a long way to go before CBD becomes the preferred method of treatment for breast cancers.
For starters, these results need to be seconded by other, separate research groups and medical papers before they become irrefutable. However, there’s a high likelihood that CBD oil could become our weapon of choice in the never ending fight against breast cancer in the United States.
CBD Oil Is Valuable Medicine That Can Be Used To Treat a Range of Health Conditions
Until now we have been discussing the astonishing health benefits of CBD and hemp cream without paying much attention to another equally important derivative of cannabis. We’re, of course, talking about Cannabidiol Oil (or CBD oil for short) – a remarkable product that boasts unmatched health benefits.
Before we begin discussing the benefits of CBD oil, it’s important to understand that not oils derived from cannabis are CBD oils. The key defining factor of CBD oils is its CBD to THC ratio. Simply put, if an oil derived from CBD has a higher concentration of CBD than THC (i.e. a CBD to THC ratio greater than one), then it can be called a CBD oil.
With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the different health conditions that CBD oil can be used to reliably treat.
CBD Oil and Seizures:
For those of you who don’t know, a seizure occurs when there’s a sudden and dramatic change in the electrical activity of the human brain. The condition can be triggered by lights, changes in temperature, and countless other factors.
The research was performed on test subjects who suffered from Dravet Syndrome (a rare condition that causes seizures and is often accompanied by mild to high fevers). The research goes on to claim that these patients, when using CBD oil, exhibited a 38.9% drop in their respective seizure frequencies!
CBD Oil and Insomnia:
Insomnia is a serious medical condition that plagues countless Americans. The ability to not fall asleep due to aggressive thoughts (or any other reason for that matter) can take its toll on the sufferer leaving them fatigued and tired all the time.
This is where CBD oil comes into the picture. Make no mistake about, CBD works wonders for insomniacs as it helps them fall asleep. For starters, this derivative of the cannabis plant significantly reduces anxiety levels (which is more than enough to put even the most troubled insomniacs to asleep).
Similarly, research shows that CBD can also increase overall sleep amounts and reduce the overall level of fatigue felt by insomniacs. In other words, CBD oil is the perfect solution for insomniacs who are tired of restless nights as it lulls the senses and isn’t addictive unlike over the counter prescriptions commonly given out to combat this horrid condition.
CBD Oil and Schizophrenia:
The number one solution to the problem of schizophrenia is adequate and appropriate therapy and counselling sessions. Often, therapists recommend pharmaceutical drugs that can have a psychoactive effect on the body (not to mention how addictive and disruptive they can be).
On the other hand, CBD oil is a much better alternative to these highly dangerous pills. A research published in 2015 claimed that CBD is a safe and efficient way of treating psychosis and has none of the aforementioned adverse effects.
That being said, it’s important to keep the CBD to THC ratio of the CBD oil in mind as the latter has highly undesirable properties. Owing to its psychoactive nature, THC usually has an adverse effect on the mind and may result in paranoia so be very careful when treating schizophrenia with CBD oil!
CBD is Most Commonly Used to Treat Physiological Symptoms
In recent years, CBD and CBD oil have been used to treat a host of different physiological symptoms of numerous conditions. For those of you who don’t know what these symptoms are, they’re basically the physical reaction of your body to a medical condition. For example, common physiological symptoms of CBD include muscle tension, shaky hands, lumps in the throat, high blood pressure, and a faster heartbeat.
Furthermore, it’s also important to understand that these physiological symptoms depend not only on the medical condition but also the patient. In other words, the extent of these symptoms varies from person to person. With that in mind, here’s a definitive list of the physiological symptoms that CBD can treat.
The Physiological Symptoms of Pain:
The human body responds to pain in an unorthodox way. While you may think that fatigue and swore muscles would rank high among the list of the physiological symptoms of pain but that’s seldom the case. Here are a few of the most common physiological symptoms of pain
- A significant increase in defecation and urination
- A significant increase in heart rate and blood pressure
- A significant increase in piloerections
- Tenser muscles
- Nausea and vomiting
This is where the positives of Cannabidiol outshine those of any over the counter medication pill commercially available today. A study published by the American Society for Clinical Investigation concluded that one dose of CBD can normalize blood pressure and minimize other such physiological symptoms of pain!
That being said, it is worth noting that this test was performed on healthy volunteers so the drug’s capability of reducing elevated blood pressures remains to be tested. However, there’s a high chance that CBD might become the most popular way of treating chronic muscular pain.
The Physiological Symptoms of Social Anxiety:
Anxiety disorders like social anxiety are extremely common in the United States as the Anxiety and Depression Association of America claims that more than 40 million American adults suffer from it!
We’ve already discussed some of the most common symptoms of social anxiety above. Apart from those, the following physiological signs have also been reported by licensed practitioners
- A weak and trembling voice
- Muscular ticks and twitching (particularly in the neck and in the face)
- Facial Freezing
Although no research paper has been published that shows CBD can outright fix these problems, there are a lot of positive signs. For starters, a father recently shared his experience of using hemp oil (i.e. a CBD derivative) to treat his son’s episodes of tics and twitches.
He notes that prior to CBD use, these tics and twitches would last anywhere between “5 and 45 minutes”. However, once CBD was introduced, he states that all facial and motor tics have “dissipated” and that his son hasn’t had an episode of uncontrollable tics “in almost two months”. This informative blog post, in its entirety, can be read here.
This just goes to show the remarkable potential CBD has for treating social anxiety and Tourette’s Syndrome.
The Physiological Symptoms of Depression:
After anxiety, depression is perhaps the most prevalent mental illness in the United States with recent stats showing that 6.7% of the adult population in the country suffers from the condition. Make no mistake about it; depression is a serious medical condition that, if left unaddressed for too long, has the potential to completely ruin a person’s life.
Thankfully, CBD has shown excellent anti-depressant properties due to its mood alleviating characteristics. To understand why this is so, we must first analyze depression from a chemical perspective. Without oversimplifying too much, most depression can be directly linked to a distinct lack of serotonin and dopamine. So, if we could normalize the release of these chemicals, we can, in theory, address depression before it gets out of hand.
This can be achieved by CBD oil as a study posted in 2011 claims that there’s definitive proof suggesting that CBD can be used to regulate the body’s stress receptors.
Similar results were also documented when Jose Alexandre Crippa conducted a separate study in Sao Paulo where he discovered that CBD can trigger the 5-HT1A receptor in the human body which is the very receptor that controls serotonin regulation. In other words, CBD has remarkable anti-anxiety and anti-depression effects!
CBD and Insomnia
How to Treat Sleep Issues with Cannabis
Insomnia is among the most misunderstood medical conditions in the world today. Most people think that just because they have difficulty falling asleep at night, they suffer from this horrific medical condition. What makes matters worse is that these people (who don’t actually suffer from insomnia) take to prescription sedatives which results in an unhealthy addiction and other such disruptive habits.
Before we begin discussing how CBD can be used to treat insomnia, let’s first understand what the medical condition actually is. For starters, insomnia is of two types;
- Primary Insomnia: A medical condition that is not related to any other illness. Primary insomnia is most commonly caused by a highly stressful life, emotional trauma, and a demanding work schedule.
- Secondary Insomnia:A medical condition that is commonly caused by sleep disorders or other issues such as chronic pain and migraines. Secondary insomnia can be caused by a myriad of factors ranging from high alcohol intake to an overreliance on painkillers.
Okay, now that we know what insomnia is, let’s take a closer look at how CBD can help address the condition.
For starters, the anti-stress and anti-inflammatory properties of CBD are well documented. What’s little known is that the human body produces cannabinoids of its own. These cannabinoids are a crucial part of an intricate connection of receptors called the endocannabinoid system. This biological network is tasked with regulating our mood, our appetite, and even our cognitive functions.
A research paper published in the well-respected FEBS Letters states that CBD can activate certain neurons in the mind to modulate our waking function. This results in a higher degree of alertness throughout the day.
While this may seem counterproductive to our cause at first glance, it’s important to understand the effect this can have in the long term. Due to heightened alertness throughout the day, insomniacs tire more and are, therefore, more likely to fall asleep at night!
Even though CBD has shown remarkable insomnia alleviating properties, it’s worth mentioning that it’s not at all an overall treatment. In fact, most medical experts claim that by making simple changes in our daily routine we can significantly reduce the impact insomnia has on the body and mind.
For starters, experts suggest that actively participating in physical activities like football and basketball and taking regular exercise can also tire the body and achieve similar effects (albeit not on the same level as CBD). Similarly, try reducing your alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine intake to detoxify your body.
Using CBD to Relieve Alzheimer’s
How CBD Helps Minimize the Aggression of NPS
The decline of our cognitive functions and our memories is a grim fear that many of us have trouble coming to terms with. Losing your keys is one thing but to not be able to recall some of your most cherished memories with your loved ones is another matter altogether. This is the very real threat that Alzheimer’s disease poses and, owing to its haunting nature, it hits a little too close to home for most.
Simply put, Alzheimer’s disease is defined as the progressive deterioration of the mind to the point that we cannot recall even our most precious memories or the names of our loved ones. The disease is by far the most common cause of dementia (i.e. the total loss memory and cognitive functions) as 60 to 80% of the people who suffer from the disease also suffer from Alzheimer’s.
It’s important to understand that while Alzheimer’s may be a disease that usually develops in people aged 65 and older, it can also target people under the age of 65 as a recent estimate suggests that more than 200,000 American adults suffer from Early-Onset Alzheimer’s. More information about Alzheimer’s disease and Early-Onset Alzheimer’s can be discovered here.
What’s even more saddening about this dreadful condition is that no cure for Alzheimer’s disease exists today. Scientists and researchers from all over the world have tried to crack this perplexing problem but to no avail. While research on common causes and possible cures of this horrible illness continues, patients and their loved ones find it very difficult to cope with the harsh realities of Alzheimer’s disease.
One aspect of research that has shown the most promise is the use of Cannabinoids to minimize the aggression of the neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) commonly associated with Alzheimer’s disease. The team of researchers working on this project discovered that certain synthetic versions of the drug (namely dronabinol and nabilone) can significantly reduce the aggression and agitation of these NPS.
However, this data isn’t definitive because of a few technical shortcomings. For starters, the study was performed on a very small sample size. Secondly, there was no placebo control group in this medical study. And lastly, the duration of the trial was extremely small.
But don’t let that distract you from the fact that CBD has shown the most promise out of all the different compounds evaluated for use thus far. So, don’t be surprised if CBD or its refined derivative emerges as a viable cure or, at the very least, the preferred method of treating this horrible medical condition.
Using CBD to Relieve Endocrine Disorders
‘Endocrine disorders’ is an umbrella term that is used to describe any disease that adversely affects the way your heart beats, the way your bones and tissues mend, and your reproduction capabilities. While the term literally encompasses hundreds of diseases, here are the few of the most common illnesses people usually think of when they hear the phrase endocrine disorder,
- Cushing’s Syndrome
- Growth Hormone Deficiency
- Addison’s Disease
- Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
Now that we know what some common endocrine disorders are, let’s take a closer look at how CBD helps in relieving these disorders.
CBD and Cushing’s Syndrome:
The latest medical research shows that there’s a lot of potential of addressing Cushing’s disease with CBD and its derivative. In particular, a recent medical study found that EL-thymoma cells can easily be influenced by apoptosis induced via CBD.
Similarly, another research documented the correlation between CBD consumption and the reduction in endocrine tumors. The researchers involved in this project were able to determine that CBD has the potential to influence events at an intracellular level. In other words, there’s a possibility that CBD can be used to stop the growth of unwanted cancer cells and endocrine tumors.
CBD and Growth Hormone Deficiency:
A research paper published back in 1993 documents the effects of Cannabidiol on the human growth hormone. Before we discuss this research paper any further, it’s worth keeping in mind that people who actually suffer from growth hormone deficiency weren’t part of the sample group. Due to the stigma associated with the compound back in the day, this study was conducted on people who volunteered for the tests. With that in mind, let’s crack on and discuss whether or not CBD can positively affect the growth hormone in humans.
Upon Results of radioimmunoassay highlighted that the test group showed declining plasma cortisol levels after placebo. However, upon the administration of CBD in the bloodstream, researchers saw a significant attenuation in plasma cortisol levels of their sample group. This lead the research team to conclude that CBD directly interferes with the body’s cortisol secretion!
CBD and Addison’s Disease:
Commonly referred to as Primary Adrenal Insufficiency, Addison’s disease can be defined as an unexplainable dysfunction of the glandular organs on the kidneys. Even though the disease is incredibly rare (as only 0.07% of the population suffers from it), it’s a serious problem plaguing the lives of thousands of people that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.
This is where CBD and its miraculous health benefits come into the picture. If you’ve been reading this landing page carefully then you will have noticed that this peculiar disease sounds awfully similar to other medical conditions that we’ve discussed thus far. In particular, CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties can significantly inhibit the (natural) inflammatory reaction of our immune system. This helps reduce the chances of a person contracting Addison’s disease.
Similarly, CBD hemp oil also helps make up for the dysfunction of the glandular organs on our kidneys, thereby further reducing the likelihood of a person developing Addison’s disease.
CBD and Diabetes:
Cannabidiol has also shown remarkable potential for treating Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. In particular, scientific research conducted by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam documents the therapeutic effects of CBD on the mind and body.
Similarly, another research team determined that infarcts (i.e. dead tissue) caused the failure of blood supply in a diabetic person. However, when these areas of dead tissue were treated with this auto-inflammatory compound, these infarcts reduced by 30% in size!
Furthermore, these findings were seconded by another team of researchers. This medical team was studying the potential benefits of treating Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes with CBD when they discovered that frequent users of marijuana had a 17% drop (on average) in their insulin threshold. Moreover, regular users of marijuana and CBD also had a smaller waist circumference that the compound can be used to treat obesity (another common endocrine disorder). Similarly, it was also discovered that CBD greatly increases the HDL-C levels in a diabetic.
All these different studies show that there’s a high chance that CBD might become our weapon of choice against these horrible disorders.
Using CBD to Relieve Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a very complicated medical condition that has the capacity to disable the brain and the spinal cord. This is further compounded by the fact that when a person contracts this horrid disease, their immune system deals irreparable and irreversible damage to the myelin.
For those of you who don’t know, the myelin is the protective sheath of fiber that shields our nerves and makes it possible for the brain to send communication signals to the other parts of the body. As a result, MS causes these nerves to become permanently damaged.
Not only does this cause a significant amount of pain to the patient, but it also has the potential to completely disrupt one’s motor function – leaving them crippled and unable to move. Common symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis include,
- Numbness of the limbs
- Loss of vision
- Unexplainable and never-ending fatigue
- Severe tremors
- Disrupted bowel function
- Disrupted bladder function
- Electric shocks felt when the neck is bent at certain angles
- Slurred speech
What makes matter worse is that the outright cause of this horrible medical condition remains a mystery to this day. As it’s an autoimmune disease (i.e. the body is attacking itself), it’s incredibly difficult to identify what causes this reaction. Until now, no known cause of Multiple Sclerosis exist, however, we’ve been able to compile a list of its risk factors from patient statistics,
- Age: People aged above 15 and under 60 are the most likely to develop this autoimmune disease
- Sex: Women are almost 50% more likely to contract this disease than men
- Genes: If your parents or their siblings had this disease, then you’re at a higher chance of developing MS
- Race: People of Northern European descent are the most likely to develop this disease while People of Asian and African descent are the least likely to contract MS
Thankfully, CBD (the gift that keeps on giving) makes it easier for patients to better manage their multiple sclerosis. Owing to its anti-inflammatory properties, CBD soothes the damaged nerves of MS patients which, in turn, significantly reduce the magnitude of pain that they fail.
Another research paper has highlighted that CBD shows great promise in symptomatic therapy. In simpler words, this basically means that the drug can be used to minimize spasticity and make lives significantly easier for these patients. The same paper goes on to claim that MS can be used to reduce other symptoms of MS such as tremors, neuropathic pain, and disrupted bladder function.
Moreover, there’s ample evidence suggesting that the drug also slows down the rate at which this autoimmune disease develops. This gives MS sufferers more time to spend with their loved ones – a truly priceless commodity to those who suffer from this disease.
Furthermore, there are also reported instances of CBD counteracting the development of experimental Multiple Sclerosis. In a nutshell, all medical research points towards the fact that CBD is a viable treatment option for managing (and even treating) multiple sclerosis. Although more medical research is required, it’s safe to say that we might be nearing a cure for this horrid disease!
How CBD Helps Treat Spinal Cord Injuries
Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI) may be rare but they have the potential to completely change a person’s life. These injuries tend to be permanent and can result in a total loss of a person’s motor control, essentially leaving them crippled and unable to walk.
What makes matters worse is that nearly 50% of all Spinal Cord Injuries happen during the most eventful years of a person’s life (i.e. between 16 and 30), with freak vehicular accidents being the leading cause. Furthermore, nearly all Spinal Cord Injuries are incurable, making them a grim and life-changing event.
To understand how CBD helps people with SCI, we must first take a closer look at the functionality of the spinal cord. In its essence, this collection of the vertebra is used to connect our processing organ (i.e. the brain), with the rest of our body. The spinal cord also facilitates sensation and makes us possible to move.
That being said, not all SCIs are the same as there are distinct groups depending on the extent of the injury. In particular, most SCIs can be divided into two main groups:
Complete Spinal Cord Injury:
As the name suggests, a complete spinal cord injury causes the complete loss of a person’s motor function. Common symptoms of complete spinal cord injury include the likes of,
- Loss of control over the ability to urinate
- Breathing troubles
- Muscle atrophy caused by the lack of physical activity
- Inability to feel pain below the point of injury
Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury:
Incomplete spinal cord injuries may not be as bad as their complete counterparts but they can still cause a large amount of pain and discomfort. Common symptoms of incomplete spinal cord injuries include the likes of:
- Loss of control over the ability to urinate
- Breathing troubles
- Heightened senses which lead to involuntary muscle spasms
- Loss of motor function
- Area of injury becoming numb
And these are just the physical symptoms of these heart-breaking and life-altering injuries. There’s also the emotional trauma and anxiety that these SCI cause which often goes unnoticed due to the severity of the physical symptoms.
Thankfully, there has been a lot of research about treating SCI with CBD and the results are promising to say the least. A medical research published in 2016 details how CBD can be used to minimize the proxy damage that spinal cord injuries have become infamous for. The medical paper goes on to claim that CBD can be used to better the motor function of the patient and significantly increase their quality of life.
Furthermore, a separate medical paper claims that CBD can be used to repair and revitalize the motor function of an injured patient. The study states that CBD can be used to lessen the extent of the injury and make life much easier for those suffering from this awful condition.
This shows that CBD is indeed a viable option for treating spinal cord injuries and could even be used in the near future to completely restore lost motor function!
CBD to Relieve Huntington’s Disease
Huntington’s disease is a genetic (or hereditary) brain disease that can cause involuntary movements, emotional distress, and might even lead to a complete loss of a person’s cognitive functions. As it causes the death and decay of brain cells, the disease gets progressively worse with time.
Although the fatality rate of Huntington’s disease is relatively low (especially considering the grim nature of the condition), this illness can cause secondary (and more fatal) complications. Recent estimates suggest that pneumonia and heart disease are by far the most common causes of death in people who suffer from Huntington’s disease.
The problem with Huntington’s disease is that its symptoms don’t appear until a person is in their late thirties/early forties. After the age of 40, the following symptoms are commonly seen:
- Involuntary spasms (chorea)
- Slow eye movement
- Impaired posture
- Difficulty prioritizing tasks
- Sexual Promiscuity
Thankfully, there has been a lot of research into the possibility of treating this horrible condition with refined CBD, as the first research papers on the subject matter can be traced back to the 1990’s! Here’s what we know so far about treating Huntington’s disease with Cannabidiol and CBD oil.
Results of Clinical Trials:
Due to research into treating Huntington’s disease with CBD is at such an advanced stage, clinical trials have already begun and we’re starting to receive incredibly promising initial results.
The first completed clinical study concerning the subject matter shows that drug has shown remarkable neuroprotective properties which means that it can slow down the exponential rate of progression of Huntington’s disease.
Endocannabinoid System and Huntington’s disease:
As discussed above, one of the worst aspects of Huntington’s disease is that it damages the neurons in the brain. This is where CBD comes into the picture. Experimental data suggests that there’s a high probability that CBD can be used to prevent the destruction of neurons.
That being said, we still have a long way to go before CBD becomes the go-to treatment for Huntington’s disease.
CBD Oil for Antibiotic Resistance
While people are quick to point out that modern medicine has progressed by leaps and bounds in recent years, very few people acknowledge the dangers that it brings. We’re, of course, talking about pathogens like bacteria and viruses becoming more and more resistant to antibiotics.
Think of it this way; whenever you take antibiotics to kill pathogens like bacteria in your system, you’re only able to kill bacteria which is sensitive to the pills. In doing so, the bacterium which is more resistant to the antibiotic administered is left behind unaffected. With time, this more resistant bacterium multiplies and grows in number and the initial problem resurfaces again.
This is a major problem because now the bacterium left in your system is more resistant to antibiotics. In other words, you’ll either have to up the dosage or the potency of the antibiotics administered to nullify the problem. Even by doing so, you’ll only kill a fraction of the bacterium in your body. Now, the bacterium left behind in your system will be even more resistant to antibiotics.
Simply put, this cycle will continue over and over again until we’re left with super-resistant bacteria that simply cannot be killed by antibiotic synthesized thus far. This is the problem that perplexes microbiologists today as they’re actively looking for drugs that can be used to kill the super-resistant bacteria.
This is where CBD enters the picture. For starters, the antibacterial cannabinoids are well known and have been documented for thousands for years. Recently, a medical study was conducted by a research team of Italian and British researchers in 2008 which further highlighted the possibility of treating super-resistant bacteria with CBD.
These scientists evaluated the performance of five cannabis derivatives (including Cannabidiol) against the notorious Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) super bacteria. The scientists concluded that the drug shows the exceptional capability of chemically altering the resistance of the bacteria to antibiotics, which essentially means that CBD could be the answer to the antibiotic resistant bacteria problem.
Even though the medical research paper states that CBD can be used to kill this antibiotic resistant bacterium, the researchers were unable to determine the mechanism behind this process. This means that further research needs to be done before we start using CBD oil to kill bacteria resistant to antibiotics but we’re very close to the answer.
Using CBD to Relieve Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is by far the most common disorder concerning the large intestines. Although the disease isn’t fatal, it can, however, cause an immense amount of pain and discomfort. Common symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome include:
- Intense abdominal pain
- Abdominal cramping and/or bloating
- Excessive gas
- Rectal Bleeding
- Weight loss
What makes matters worse is that the direct cause of IBS isn’t known. That being said, using data and statistics, we can identify the common factors that may contribute to this disease.
- Contractions of the muscularis layer (the walls of the large intestine)
- Abnormalities in the central nervous system
- Muscular inflammation of the intestines
- Severe bacterial infections (in particular, IBS can develop after diarrhea)
- Deficiency of the microflora (i.e. the good bacteria in the intestines that play an important role in keeping us healthy).
It’s a little known fact that cannabis resins and its oil derivatives have been used for centuries to treat and address gastrointestinal distress. Even though the number of clinical trials and medical studies on the subject matter is unbelievably low, the little research done on CBD highlight the drug’s remarkable potential of treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
In particular, a research published in the well-respected British Journal of Pharmacology in 2004 documents the correlation between the natural cannabinoid receptors in our body and the gut motility. The research paper begins by citing other studies conducted by scientists that show that CB1R can be used to alter the gut’s sensory processing and even the extrinsic control of the gut.
It then states that the activation of the CB1R receptor has a different impact on different parts of the GI tract. For example, the upper GI tract can easily be influenced by the CB1R receptor while the lower GI tract shows lower levels of susceptibility. The study claims that this unique extent of the impact is to blame for common bowel disorders like IBS, for example. A close, structural analysis led the researchers to conclude that the CBD can be used to reduce nerve pain and lower levels of inflammation in the gut (two of the most common symptoms of IBS), which increases the quality of life of the IBS patient.
Similar results were also documented in a separate medical study published in 2011 which stated that CBD shows remarkable potential for treating (and even curing) Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The study highlights the effects of CBD on the intestinal biopsies of people who suffered from this horrible disease.
Owing to its unmatched anti-inflammatory responses, the research team stated that there’s a presents a viable therapeutic strategy for treating bowel diseases caused inflammation in the gut. Granted this study was done on patients suffering from ulcerative colitis, the results can be applied to IBS (as the two medical conditions are very similar in nature)!
Using CBD to Relieve Kidney Disease
Chronic Kidney Disease (also commonly referred to as Chronic Kidney Failure) is a medical condition in which the kidneys lose their functionality. For those of you who don’t know, the kidneys are tasked with the filtering of wastes and other fluids from the blood. These fluids are then excreted from the body in the form of urine.
The worst thing about chronic kidney disease is that its symptoms don’t become apparent until the kidneys have become significantly damaged. The problem is further compounded by the fact that (owing to the critically important role that our kidneys play in keeping us healthy) chronic kidney disease can cause death unless the patient gets a kidney transplant or opts for regular dialysis.
That being said, the most common symptoms of Chronic Kidney Failure include the likes of,
- Problems sleeping
- Involuntary muscular tics and twitches
- Frequent muscular cramps
- Loss of appetite
- Chest pains
- A significant decrease in mental sharpness
- Shortness of breath
- High blood pressure
What makes matters worse is that Chronic Kidney Disease is just the tip of the iceberg as this disease tends to cause a plethora of different medical conditions. Type-1 Diabetes, Pyelonephritis, Vesicoureteral, and Interstitial Nephritis are just a few of the many diseases that Chronic Kidney Failure can cause!
Thankfully, there’s a lot of medical research suggesting that CBD could become a viable outlet for treating and overcoming Chronic Kidney Disease. A study conducted in 2009 documented that CBD significantly inhibits cell death and even reduces the inflammation in the organ. This leads to an improved renal function which essentially means that the drug can be used to improve the quality of life of those who suffer from Chronic Kidney Disease.
That being said, it is worth noting that this study was performed on animal cells so we can’t say for sure if similar results will be obtained in humans. In other words, more medical research needs to be done before we can say for certain that CBD improves renal function in humans.
One study that really got the community excited was published back in October 2004 which discusses how CBD acting at CB1R could improve cardiovascular function in some cases of hypertension. The researchers working on this study concluded that by making the blood vessels vasodilate, CBD significantly enhances the blood flow in the kidneys (without elevating blood pressure), which, in turn, reduces the extent of damage done to the kidneys!
Using CBD to Overcome Smoking Addiction
Even though nicotine and tobacco (commonly found in most cigarettes) may not be as disruptive or as toxic as heroin and cocaine, the National Institute on Drug Abuse claims that the former is just addictive as the latter!
A lot of this has to do with the fact that nicotine can stimulate the release of dopamine in the mind. For those of you who don’t know, this is the same compound which is often behind our most powerful and intense emotions. Once the brain gets used to high levels of dopamine, it periodically requires more nicotine to ensure that it gets the dopamine it needs to function properly.
Any reluctance to give the brain the dopamine it needs will result in intense headaches, mood swings, heightened irritability, and migraines that make it impossible for you to go about your day. This is bad news particularly for the people who know of the dangers of smoking and are desperately trying to break this bad habit.
This is where CBD comes into the picture. A recent study published in 2013 documented that the periodic use of CBD significantly reduced the level of cigarettes smoked by nicotine addicts. The biggest misconception people have about this study is that they interpret its results and end up believing that CBD is a direct substitute or replacement of nicotine (i.e. cigarettes).
So, before we even begin discussing this case study, allow us to set the record straight; CBD is not a direct replacement or substitute for cigarettes. It merely helps nicotine addicts reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke on a daily basis. Confused? Allow us to elaborate.
The medical study mentioned above discussed the effects of CBD in a small group of 24 smokers. These people were then divided into two groups (of 12 smokers each) and given an inhaler to use whenever they felt the need to smoke. This is where things get interesting.
The first group was given an inhaler of CBD while the other received an inhaler with no CBD in it (i.e. the Placebo group). The researchers observed that the members of the first group (who received CBD inhalers) showed a massive 40% drop in the cigarettes they smoked on a daily basis while members of the placebo group showed no significant change. This led the research team to conclude that CBD significantly reduces cigarette consumption in nicotine addicts!
The case study, in its entirety, can be read here.
Things change daily. That is why it’s important to stay informed and educated on the latest news, studies and research in the medical marijuana industry.
