Using Cannabis To Treat Depression

According to the World Health Organization, around 300 million individuals across the globe suffer from some form of depression. Although different techniques and methods are used to treat depression, there is no remedy that can ‘cure’ depression instantly. In fact, depression may never truly go away, but there are ways to manage and control its symptoms.

Traditional Treatments for Depression

How depression may be treated varies with each individual, depending on the severity of their condition.

Those who experience mild depression are usually recommended to seek psychotherapy without being prescribed any drugs.  These psychosocial treatments can take various forms as well, such as interpersonal psychotherapy or cognitive behavioural therapy.

Psychotherapy is also part of the treatment plan for people who have moderate to high depression, but this is usually alongside prescribed medication. SSRIs and tricyclic antidepressants are usually taken by patients under the supervision of their doctors and can have unpleasant side effects.

Marijuana and Depression

Marijuana and DepressionWhile the effects of marijuana on depression are still being investigated by researches, there has been considerable evidence that supports the use of cannabis. This is particularly targeted towards stabilizing mood and restoring the functioning of endocannabinoids. The latter are naturally occurring chemical compounds produced in the brain and are responsible for regulating an individual’s emotions, behaviour, and their cognitive and motor control.

These endocannabinoids have a similar chemical composition as that of cannabis, and also share similar properties. It has been found that when a person undergoes stress, their brain suppresses the natural production of endocannabinoids. This affects their emotional, cognitive, and behavioural responses and is a contributing factor to them experiencing depression. However, an intake of the right dosage and amount of marijuana can help restore the normal functioning of the brain by performing the activities the brain’s endocannabinoids did.

Another recent study compared the mental and physical symptoms participants facing depression experienced before and after consuming marijuana. The results showed that the symptoms for depression were reduced considerably in 89% of the sessions conducted. This was especially true for a higher strain of CBD.

Although a lot more research is required to fully establish the effectiveness of cannabis for treating depression, studies have thus far shown promise for its usage. However, although a viable option for treating depression, marijuana should be used after consulting your therapist and always alongside other forms of treatment.
